Life is about growth, and for Al Roker, that means constantly striving to be a better father. While he's already an incredible dad to his kids, the Today show weatherman admits he's always looking for ways to improve—especially when it comes to his son, Nick, who has special needs.
During a heartfelt moment on Today on January 2, 2020, Al opened up about his desire to be more patient. "I want to be more patient, I think," the 65-year-old said candidly. "Especially toward the end of the week, when I’m tired, I tend to get a little short with Nick. I’m trying to be more patient with people in general, but especially with him."
Hoda Kotb Steps In to Celebrate Al's Parenting
Al’s colleague, Hoda Kotb, wasn’t about to let him take all the credit. The 55-year-old co-host jumped in to remind everyone just how extraordinary Al is as a father. "Al and I had the chance to celebrate New Year’s together, and one of the things Joel [Schiffman] and I both marvel at when it comes to you and your family is you and your son, Nick," Hoda gushed. "There are so many great father-son relationships out there, but watching Nick rest his head on your shoulder? That might be one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen."

Al, visibly touched by Hoda's words, responded thoughtfully. "I do want to be a better person, and that starts with being a better dad," he said. "Parents of kids with special needs know this struggle—it’s not that they mean to test your patience, but they do. And that’s okay. What I admire most about Nick is his determination. He’s so goal-oriented, and honestly, he’s just a great kid."

Al’s Journey with Nick and His Other Children
Al and his wife, Deborah Roberts, share two children: their son Nick and their daughter Leila, who’s 21. This isn’t the first time Al has spoken openly about the challenges—and joys—of raising Nick. In a previous interview with Guideposts magazine, Al revealed some of the ups and downs he faces as a dad. "Do I get frustrated with my son sometimes? You bet," he admitted. "But then I remember my own father, how understanding he was. And Deborah reminds me that I need to show Nick not only that I love him but that I genuinely like him. More than that, I admire him."
Al’s reflections show just how deeply he connects with Nick, and how much he values their relationship. It’s clear that being a father to Nick has taught Al valuable lessons in patience, empathy, and unconditional love.
