Garth Brooks Parents: Meet Troyal Raymond Brooks And Colleen Carroll - ABTC

Let me tell you a story about Garth Brooks. Growing up in rural Oklahoma, Garth had no clue he’d one day become one of country music’s biggest legends. His parents, Troyal Brooks and Colleen Carroll, played a massive role in shaping who he is today. They instilled in him the importance of hard work and determination, qualities that have propelled him to the top of the music world.

During a recent chat with Closer Weekly and other reporters at the launch event for A&E Biography’s upcoming special, Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On, the 57-year-old opened up about the invaluable lessons his parents taught him. “My dad always told me, if you’re going to fly, it’s going to take a hell of a lot of work,” Garth shared at the November 18 event. “He wasn’t just talking about music. He was talking about life in general.”

Garth’s dad, Troyal, was the realist in the family, while his mom, Colleen, was the dreamer. “My dad was a Korean War veteran and a Golden Gloves boxing champion. He was all about discipline and hard work,” Garth explained. “But my mom was the singer. She was the one who encouraged me to follow my dreams. Together, they created this perfect balance of realism and inspiration.”

  • Garth grew up with five older brothers and one sister, and life in the Brooks household wasn’t easy. “There were no days off. My dad believed that if he wasn’t pushing us 24/7, he wasn’t doing his job,” Garth recalled. “It was tough, but looking back, I can see how much it shaped who I am today.”

The Lessons That Shaped a Legend

Garth credits his parents with instilling in him a strong work ethic, which has been a cornerstone of his success. “The two greatest gifts your parents can give you are the examples of the people you want to be and the people you don’t want to be,” he said. “My parents gave me both, and it’s something I carry with me every day.”

These lessons even influenced the way Garth raises his own three daughters, Taylor, August, and Allie, with his ex-wife Sandy Mahl. “Parenting is hard, man. You’ve got to find that balance between pushing your kids to be the best they can be and making sure they know they’re loved no matter what,” Garth shared. “It’s a tricky line to walk, but I think my parents gave me the tools to figure it out.”

    Growing as a Father

Even with all the lessons he learned from his parents, Garth admitted that becoming a father wasn’t easy. “It was harder than I ever imagined. But then Trisha Yearwood came into my life, and everything changed,” he gushed. “She’s been my rock. She’s helped me navigate the ups and downs of fatherhood, and I’m so grateful for her.”

Garth’s love for his daughters is evident in everything he does. “They’re my whole world. I worship those three girls,” he said with a smile. “I hope they feel about me the way I felt about my mom. And I have to give credit to my dad too. He taught me what it means to be a man and a father.”
