Peter Gallagher’s Journey as a Father in Real Life and on Screen

Here’s an exclusive scoop from Peter Gallagher, the talented actor who’s stepping into the role of Zoey’s father in the highly anticipated musical series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. This isn’t the first time the 64-year-old actor has taken on the role of a father, both on screen and in real life. Speaking at the NBC Fall and Midseason Lunch, Peter told Closer Weekly, “There’s nothing I love more than being a father. Remember my role as Sandy Cohen in the beloved drama The O.C.? That was a role close to my heart.”

Peter isn’t just a dad on screen; he’s a devoted father to two children with his wife Paula Harwood. “We’ve got James, who’s 29, and Kathryn, who’s 26. Recently, Kathryn decided to watch The O.C. without me interrupting, and it was quite the experience for her,” Peter shares with a chuckle.

The Legacy of The O.C. and Fatherly Advice

Even years after The O.C. wrapped, Peter continues to connect with fans around the globe. “I still get messages from young people who are about to take a big test or face a major challenge. They ask for advice, and I tell them, ‘You’ve got this. Keep breathing.’” It’s this kind of encouragement that Peter cherishes. “It’s like giving the advice a father might give to his child. Sometimes, that little bit of support can make all the difference,” he reflects.

Peter’s perspective on parenting has evolved over time. In a past interview with Good Housekeeping, he shared how remarkable it is to have deep conversations with someone you once saw as a small child. “Sometimes I walk into my home, and there they are—two adults where my children used to be! It’s both humbling and awe-inspiring,” Peter laughs.

But parenting isn’t without its challenges. “You realize early on that, after a certain age, you’re essentially powerless. You can give your kids the best start in life, but ultimately, they’ll forge their own paths. Hopefully, you haven’t messed them up too badly along the way,” Peter jokes.

Both Kathryn and James have followed in their father’s footsteps. Kathryn is now an actress, and James is a film director. “They’ve made us incredibly proud,” Peter beams. When asked about his marriage, Peter says, “It’s full of excitement and adventure. There’s never a dull moment. And if you stick with it long enough, you might find a sense of grace that accompanies you both on this journey.”
