While their kids may take after their parents in terms of looks, Tom admits it took him some time to understand that his son, Benjamin, has his own unique set of interests, which differ from his own and from those of his oldest son, 12-year-old Jack.
Tom opened up to Men’s Health about his journey as a father, revealing, “When Benny came along, I thought he would be just like Jack. So I was like, ‘C’mon, let’s do this.’ And he was like, ‘Nope.’ And I was like, ‘What? No, do this!’” Tom couldn’t understand why his son didn’t share the same interests as him, but thanks to his wife, Gisele, he gained a deeper understanding of his son’s individuality.
Gisele played a pivotal role in helping Tom recognize that not all kids are cut from the same cloth. “Gisele kept saying to me, ‘Would you effing understand that your son is different?’ It was hard for me,” Tom confessed. “I was like, ‘What do you mean? He’s a boy; he should just do all these things that I do.’” But as it turns out, Benny had his own passions and interests, and that’s what makes him so special.

“The reality is that Benny just likes different things,” Tom continued, reflecting on his journey as a father. “And it’s great because now I just have to go do what he wants to do. When we do that, we have the best time. He’s like, ‘OMG, Dad, you’re so funny.’ He loves joking, and I joke back.” This newfound understanding has strengthened their bond, proving that embracing each child’s individuality is key to building a strong family connection.
Among all of Tom’s children, he shares the most similarities with Jack, whom he welcomed with his ex, Bridget Moynahan, in 2007. “Jack is just like me — he holds a lot in. Benny lets it all out. Vivi, she doesn’t care,” Tom revealed. “They’re going to be their own selves, not who you want them to be.” It’s this acceptance and love for who his children truly are that makes Tom such an incredible father.
