There’s something about hearing a former president open up about life, death, and everything in between that makes you stop and listen. That’s exactly what happened when Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, shared his thoughts on resurrection and life after death during a Sunday school service at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia. At 95 years old, Carter’s reflections carry a weight that only comes with time, experience, and faith.
It was back in 2015 when Carter faced one of the biggest challenges of his life—a cancer diagnosis. He didn’t shy away from the topic during his recent sermon, sharing how he initially thought his days were numbered. "I assumed naturally that I was going to die very quickly," he admitted, recalling the moment he learned about the cancer spreading through his body. But here’s the thing: when Carter found out, he didn’t plead with God for more time. Instead, he accepted whatever lay ahead, whether it meant living or dying.
“I said a prayer about it. I didn’t ask God to let me live. I found that I was absolutely and completely at ease with death,” Carter revealed during the service. His words remind us all of the power of acceptance and trust in the face of uncertainty. It’s not always about fighting for more time; sometimes, it’s about finding peace in the moment.

Building a Better Community
As Carter wrapped up his heartfelt speech, he left the congregation with a powerful message: the importance of looking out for one another. “We make hundreds of thousands of decisions every day,” he said. “Every one of us makes the crucial decision in our life … that this is the kind of person that I myself chose to be.” It’s a reminder that our actions matter—not just for ourselves, but for those around us. By supporting each other, we can become better individuals and, ultimately, a stronger community.
A Journey Through Health Challenges
Back in August 2015, Carter announced his cancer diagnosis in a statement following liver surgery. “Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body,” he stated at the time. Despite the diagnosis, Carter remained optimistic, rearranging his schedule to undergo treatment at Emory Healthcare. Since then, he’s faced additional health challenges, including three significant falls in 2019. The first required hip replacement surgery, while the others left fans worried about his well-being.
