Hey there, friends! Let’s talk about a major life chapter: the empty nest. For Hollywood power couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, this phase has officially arrived. With their kids all grown up and out of the house, the couple is embracing a new chapter in their lives. Imagine the freedom that comes with no longer having to juggle school schedules or family dinners — it’s a whole new world for these two.
A New Chapter for the Douglas-Zeta Jones Family
Michael Douglas, now 75, recently opened up about this exciting yet unexpected turn in his life during an appearance at the PaleyFest NY event for The Kominsky Method. Alongside Catherine, 50, they’ve entered the world of empty nesting as their kids have flown the coop. Their son Dylan, 19, is now in college, while their daughter Carys, 16, is off at boarding school. It’s a whole new ballgame for the couple, and they’re making the most of it.

Adjusting to the New Normal
Life can certainly take unexpected turns, and that’s exactly what happened for the Douglases. “Carys is in boarding school, she’s gone so sort of unexpected. She really wanted to take off,” Michael told Closer Weekly and other reporters. He admitted that this decision came as a surprise, as they had recently moved closer to her school to make things easier. Despite the unexpected change, Michael and Catherine quickly embraced their new reality. “It was unexpected because we actually moved to be five minutes from the school that she’d been going to after having had a 45-minute drive and she was really happy. And then all of a sudden this moment came, so we go what are we going to do now?”
And you know what? They didn’t waste a second figuring it out. “You spend a lot of time talking about your kids, and all of a sudden … and then we got over that very quickly!” Michael explained. “And now we’re like, ‘wow, we can do anything in our schedules without … obviously the holiday stuff.’ But other than that during the week and everything. So we’re taking full advantage of that, seeing a lot of shows and traveling a lot.” Sounds like they’re making the most of this new chapter, doesn’t it?
Proud Parent Moments
Even with his kids away, Michael remains incredibly proud of them, especially Dylan, who has overcome significant challenges. “Dylan had serious dyslexia issues, and had to go to special schools earlier on and worked really hard,” the star of Romancing the Stone revealed. “The fact that he worked himself up to get into an Ivy League school I’m so proud of.” Now that’s some serious parenting pride right there!

Family Legacy and Future Plans
Michael, who also shares son Cameron, 40, with his ex-wife Diandra Luker, might have his kids away from home, but that doesn’t mean they’re out of his thoughts. In fact, he once revealed that his children might be following in the family footsteps. “Right now, all three of my kids want to be actors — Cameron, Dylan, and Carys, and my niece, Kelsey,” the A-lister told Entertainment Tonight. “So that’s four of the next dynasty.”
And if that wasn’t exciting enough, he added, “Dad and I got about 120 years and about 130 movies, so it will be more and we just got a grandchild — little granddaughter Lua.” Talk about a legacy in the making!
