Hey there, friends! Shannen Doherty, the iconic star of Beverly Hills, 90210, shared a heartfelt post on Instagram this past Monday, August 12, about the loss of her beloved horse, Picasso. It's a story that tugs at the heartstrings and reminds us all about the deep bonds we form with our animal companions.
A Special Bond That Lasted a Lifetime
Shannen took to Instagram to express her sorrow over the passing of Picasso, her favorite horse. In her post, she shared a touching story about how their bond began. "Picasso. I guess you're not supposed to have favorites, but he was in fact my favorite," she wrote. "I fell in love with him at a barn where my other horses were kept. Even though he was for sale and serious professional riders were considering him as their potential Grand Prix horse, I couldn't help but connect with him on a deeper level."
Shannen described how she would spend time with Picasso, giving him baths, walking him, feeding him carrots and apples, and talking to him. "We were bonded," she explained, capturing the essence of the connection they shared. It wasn't just about riding or training; it was about building trust and companionship.

Picasso. I guess you’re not supposed to have favorites, but he was in fact my favorite. I fell in love with him out at a barn where my other horses were. He was for sale but serious professional riders were looking at him to be their Grand Prix horse. When they were done testing him, I would give him a bath, walk him, feed him carrots and apples and talk to him. We were bonded. I was told not to buy him. He was too strong, hard to handle, needed a male rider, etc. I bought him anyway because I didn’t like how the people who were looking to buy him treated him. He became mine, and I became his. He was gentle with me. Took me over jumps perfectly. I trusted him completely, and he trusted me. I was in love.
Defying the Odds for Love
Shannen explained that despite being warned against purchasing Picasso, she decided to follow her heart. "I was told not to buy him. They said he was too strong, too difficult to handle, and that he needed a male rider," she revealed. But none of that mattered to her. "I bought him anyway because I didn’t like how the people who were looking to buy him treated him." Her decision was rooted in love and compassion, ensuring that Picasso would have the life he deserved.
Once Picasso became hers, their relationship flourished. "He became mine, and I became his," Shannen wrote. "He was gentle with me, took me over jumps perfectly, and I trusted him completely. I was in love." The bond they shared was undeniable, a testament to the deep connection between humans and animals.
A Life Well-Lived
Even as time passed, Shannen's love for Picasso never wavered. "That love has never wavered," she shared. "I turned him out to pasture many years ago. I wanted him to be a horse—to run free, to hang out with other horses, to just be a horse." Despite the distance, she continued to visit him often, maintaining their special connection.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck unexpectedly. "Today, he suffered a ruptured intestine. No surgery was possible. There was no way to save him," Shannen wrote in her post. "He died 20 minutes before I could even get to him." Her heartbreak is palpable, and her words reflect the profound loss she feels. "My heart is shattered," she concluded, adding a heartfelt tribute with the hashtag #picasso and the date of his passing.

Shannen's words remind us of the importance of cherishing the moments we share with our beloved pets. While Picasso's life may have been cut tragically short, his legacy lives on in the memories and love Shannen holds dear. Our thoughts are with her during this difficult time. We’re sure Picasso is running free in horse heaven, just as Shannen had hoped for him.
