'The Sandlot': Patrick Renna Spills Film Secrets Nearly 30 Years Later

"You’re killing me, Smalls!" If you're a fan of classic movies, this line probably rings a bell. It's one of the unforgettable moments brought to life by Patrick Renna in the beloved film, The Sandlot. Interestingly, Patrick's son has already started to explore his dad's legendary baseball flick, and it's shaping up to be quite an adventure for both of them.

Patrick Renna Introduces The Sandlot to His Son

In a recent exclusive chat with Closer Weekly, the 40-year-old actor opened up about sharing his iconic role in The Sandlot with his young son. Patrick believes the right time to introduce his son to the movie is around the age of five. "I feel like the age for that is about 5," Patrick said. "I’ve already shown him a bit of it, and he seemed really into it. I think he even recognized me. He probably thought, 'Hey, that guy looks a little like Dad.' But I think he’ll truly get it when he’s around 4 or 5 years old."

Had a little layover in #SLC so brought him to the original sandlot. Little overgrown. I swear he just pointed!

Special Plans for a Sandlot Reunion

Patrick has a vision for when his son is ready to watch the entire movie. "Maybe we’ll have to do it during a Worldmark by Wyndham getaway and make it a whole event. You know, gather a bunch of 5-year-olds together, maybe even get some of the original cast involved, and create an unforgettable experience," he said with excitement. "A lot of my co-stars started acting earlier than me, so their kids are all grown up now. This will be a unique opportunity for Flynn, and the others will be there with their adult children, ready to show them the ropes."

    Teaching Moments with Flynn

Patrick recently teamed up with WorldMark by Wyndham to create a how-to-video in honor of National S’mores Day. This project allowed him to share a special moment with his son, Flynn. "Getting to teach my 2.5-year-old how to make a s’more was truly special," Patrick shared fondly. "At first, I was a bit worried about how he’d handle it since he’s still so young, but he was completely fascinated by the s’mores. It was perfect."

While Flynn might not be ready to dive into the sugary treat just yet, Patrick knows that day is coming. "He wouldn’t eat it right away, but I guess that’s his mom’s influence—teaching him not to eat too much sugar. I’m sure once he gets a taste, he’ll want them non-stop," he laughed.

    Fatherhood: A Journey of Surprises

While Patrick might be new to fatherhood, he’s already finding joy in the unexpected. "Everything is a surprise," he admitted. "Thankfully, I have a spectacular wife who handles most of the heavy lifting. I’m just here to enjoy the moments when they come." Patrick explained how Flynn’s growing independence is bringing them closer. "When Flynn was younger, it was all about mom. Babies are so small and dependent on her. Now that he’s growing, walking, running, playing, and talking, I think he can start to appreciate some of the good things about me too."

Patrick shared a touching moment that highlighted the bond they’re building. "The other night, I got home at midnight after a trip to Chicago. I wanted to see him before bed, so I leaned over and gave him a little kiss. He woke up, looked at me, and said, 'Oh, I missed you!' Then he gave me a hug that nearly broke my heart. It was incredibly sweet. These moments are what make fatherhood so special."

    Supporting Flynn’s Dreams

As a former child actor, Patrick is cautious but supportive of Flynn’s potential career path. "I’d be careful about pushing him into acting," Patrick said. "I’d want to make sure it’s something he truly wants to do. Once he’s old enough to have those conversations, if acting is his passion, I’ll fully support him. Of course, driving across LA for auditions might have to wait until he can drive himself!"

    Family Traditions and Values

Patrick is eager to pass on his love for sports and family traditions to Flynn. "I’m looking forward to throwing a baseball around with him and just spending quality time as a family," he said. "That’s why this partnership with Worldmark by Wyndham feels so right. It’s all about family, from making s’mores around the campfire to planning family trips and vacations. These are the moments that matter to me."

Reflecting on his upbringing, Patrick emphasized the importance of family values. "The values I grew up with are ones I want to pass on to Flynn. Having a place like Worldmark by Wyndham where families can gather and create meaningful memories is something special. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters—friendship, inclusion, and spending time together. Sure, technology has its place, but I don’t want Flynn glued to a screen all day. Balance is key."
