GREAT SCOTT! Back to the Future: The Musical bring out the hits | BGT

Hey there, friends. Let me tell you something that's been on my mind lately. It's been a solid seven years since we first heard whispers about this stage musical. But hey, when your name is Back to the Future and you’ve got a DeLorean in your corner, time doesn't matter much, does it? For all the fans out there who grew up with Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, Back to the Future: The Musical is set to premiere in England next February. And unless someone meddles with the space-time continuum, it'll likely make its way to the U.S. sooner than later.

Reliving the Magic Through Song

Alright, let's dive into the plot. The musical stays true to the beloved film, where Marty McFly, our rock 'n' roll-loving teenager, accidentally gets transported back to 1955. How does he pull this off? Well, thanks to the genius of Dr. Emmett Brown and his time-traveling DeLorean, of course. Now, here's the twist: Marty must ensure his teenage parents fall in love, or else he won't exist in 1985. Olly Dobson, who previously dazzled audiences in Bat Out of Hell: The Musical and Matilda, will step into the iconic role of Marty. The rest of the cast will be announced soon, so stay tuned.

Who’s Behind the Curtain?

Now, let's talk about the creative team behind this masterpiece. The book is penned by none other than Bob Gale, the same guy who co-wrote the film trilogy with director Robert Zemeckis. The music and lyrics are crafted by the legendary Alan Silvestri, who’s behind the score of Avengers: Endgame, and Glen Ballard, a six-time Grammy Award winner. They’re bringing us new tunes, along with some favorites like “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode.” The production is helmed by Tony Award-winning director John Rando, who’s known for Urinetown and On the Town. The design team includes Tony and Olivier Award winners like Tim Hatley, Hugh Vanstone, Gareth Owen, and Finn Ross. Choreography is by Chris Bailey, illusions by Paul Kieve, and musical supervision by Nick Finlow. Orchestrations are handled by Ethan Popp, with dance arrangements by David Chase. This team is stacked, folks.

  • Producer Colin Ingram's Vision

Producer Colin Ingram is thrilled about the project. He said, “This show has been six years in the making, and we couldn’t be happier to debut it in Manchester before the rest of the world sees it. Just like I did with Ghost – The Musical, Manchester gets the first crack at it. So, synchronize your watches because when this musical hits 88 mph, you’re in for an unforgettable experience!”

The original cast members are buzzing with excitement over this musical adaptation. Christopher Lloyd, who played the eccentric Doc Brown, shared, “Ever since Bob Gale told me about this, I’ve been eagerly waiting to see it. I’m particularly curious about what Doc Brown sounds like when he sings. I can’t wait to attend the opening in Manchester and experience our beloved movie as a musical. The only downside? I don’t have a real time machine, so I can’t see it tomorrow!”

    Bob Gale's Thoughts

Bob Gale added, “Bob Zemeckis and I have been working tirelessly to bring this project to life for years. Good things take time, and now the time is finally right. Our cast is incredible, the songs are top-notch, and director John Rando is doing an outstanding job of capturing the magic of the movie. We’re stoked to retell our story on stage in a fresh, exciting way. Fans of Back to the Future worldwide will surely share our excitement. As Marty McFly would say, ‘your kids are gonna love it’ — and so will you and your parents. There’s no better way to celebrate the movie’s 35th anniversary, and we’re thrilled to announce that ‘The Future’ is indeed coming back!”

Back to the Future: The Musical kicks off at the Manchester Opera House in the U.K. on February 20, 2020, for a 12-week season, wrapping up on May 17. After that, it will head to the West End.
