You might not believe this, but the guy we all know and love from Fixer Upper, Chip Gaines, once thought he’d spend his life as a bachelor! In a recent conversation with People, Chip revealed how his priorities were vastly different back in 2001 when he first met the woman who would become his wife, Joanna Gaines.
Now, let’s be honest: Chip isn’t exactly the type of guy you’d peg as someone who avoided commitment. But back then, the 44-year-old admitted he wasn’t the relationship-focused guy many people might have expected. “I wasn’t that guy,” he said. “I dated girls who had their lives mapped out—they wanted to get married, have kids, and live this picture-perfect life. But I was too focused on myself. It was all about what I wanted, and I didn’t have anything holding me back.”

Love at First Sight? Not Quite, But Something Even Better
Everything changed when Chip met Joanna, who was 41 at the time, while she was working at her father’s Firestone automotive shop in Waco, Texas. “It was like a switch flipped inside me,” he shared. “I started to grow up, to mature. Suddenly, I could see a future that I hadn’t before. It wasn’t just about me anymore. It was about us.”
And while it might not have been love at first sight, Chip knew early on that something special was happening. “It clicked in my brain,” he explained. “I realized this could work. This was the real deal.”
From Bachelor to Believer: Chip’s Journey to Marriage
Almost two years after they first met, Chip and Joanna tied the knot in 2003. Despite his obvious love for Joanna, Chip admitted there was an adjustment period. “I had to make some serious changes,” he confessed. “I had to become a better person, not just for her but for the life we were building together.”
But here’s the kicker: Chip didn’t see these changes as sacrifices. Instead, he saw them as opportunities. “When I thought about being an 80-year-old man sitting on a rocking chair with my beautiful wife by my side, I got really excited,” he said. “The idea of making it that far together, of building a life that lasts, that’s what motivated me.”

2019 and Beyond: A Life Filled with Love and Laughter
Fast-forward to 2019, and life is nothing short of amazing for the former HGTV stars. On May 31, Chip and Joanna celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary. Besides running a multi-faceted company, they’re the proud parents of five kids: Drake, 14, Ella, 12, Duke, 10, Emmie, 9, and Crew, who’s just 11 months old. “I tell my kids this all the time,” Chip said. “Your mom is the one who keeps everything running smoothly. She’s the glue that holds us together.”
Of course, running a big business and raising a large family isn’t always easy. But Chip and Joanna make it look effortless. “They’ve mastered the art of multitasking,” an insider told Closer Weekly in October 2018. “They balance family life with keeping their marriage strong. Once the kids are in bed, Chip and Joanna enjoy date nights. Joanna loves to cook, and they often joke around in the kitchen while she prepares Chip’s favorite meals.”
It’s clear that Chip and Joanna have built something truly special. And we couldn’t be happier for them!
