Fighting Back Against Trolls: How Dean McDermott Teaches His Kids To Handle Cyberbullying

Here’s a story about standing up for what’s right. Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling’s kids have been dealing with some harsh words from internet trolls lately. But their dad, Dean, isn’t just sitting back and letting it slide. He’s taking action and teaching his kids how to handle the negativity in a healthy way.

Dean McDermott Speaks Out Against Trolls

Dean, now 52, opened up about the bullying his kids are facing during an episode of his "Daddy Issues" podcast, which aired on June 10. Joining him were comedians Adam Hunter and Nicky Paris. He shared how these trolls are targeting his children, commenting on their looks, hair, and clothes. “Enough is enough,” Dean declared. “I’ve drawn the line. I want my kids to learn how to deal with criticism in a more spiritual, positive way.”

Dean emphasized the true purpose of social media. “It was designed to bring people closer together, not to give a megaphone to those who shouldn’t have one,” he said. “I’ll always stand up for my children, and I’ll always be there for the underdog.”

    Standing Up to the Hate

Dean’s resolve comes after a particularly tough incident. Back in January, his wife Tori, 46, posted a photo of their kids—Liam, 12, Stella, 11, Hattie, 7, Finn, 6, and Beau, 2—at the premiere of A Dog’s Way Home. Instead of praise, strangers flooded the comments with nasty remarks about the kids’ clothing, and some even called them fat. Dean was furious and quickly responded on Instagram. “I am absolutely horrified and disgusted by the comments being left about my children,” he wrote. “Body shaming and bullying my children? What is wrong with you people? These are kids! They’re messy and dirty—that’s what kids do!”

Dean also defended their choice of shopping at Target. “What’s wrong with that? Over half of America shops there. Kids grow out of clothes so fast, it’s mind-blowing. Are we supposed to shop at Gucci? These are kids, folks—messy, stinky, little bundles of fun, laughter, and love.”

    Prior Incidents of Online Criticism

This wasn’t the first time Dean and Tori’s kids faced online criticism. In September 2018, trolls insulted the family again, and this time Tori took the lead in defending her children. “I am a proud mama bear,” she wrote. “I enjoy sharing our family journey with my family, friends, fans, and our supportive community. To those who felt the need to #momshame and #kidshame me and my children, I say ‘Shame on you!’ I was raised to believe that if you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all.”
