Speaking to Closer Weekly at the 2019 NHL Awards, Hamm couldn’t help but rave about the legendary Tom Cruise and share a few behind-the-scenes tidbits that fans are sure to love.
Jon Hamm Talks Filming and Release Date
For fans of the original film, the wait for Top Gun: Maverick has been nothing short of excruciating. Thankfully, Hamm confirmed during his interview that filming has officially wrapped up. “We just finished,” he revealed, adding that the movie is slated to hit theaters in summer 2020. That’s right—34 years will have passed between the original Top Gun and its sequel, making this a truly historic moment in cinema history. It’s no surprise that anticipation is at an all-time high!
A Sacrifice for the Role
While Hamm was thrilled to be part of such a monumental project, he did admit to making a small but significant sacrifice for his role. “Unfortunately, I had to shave my beard for the movie,” he joked, referencing the military precision required for his character. Admirals in the Navy don’t sport beards, so Hamm had to part ways with his beloved facial hair. Social media users weren’t shy about expressing their opinions, but Hamm took it all in stride. “It’s all part of the job,” he quipped.

Working with Tom Cruise: A Dream Come True
When it comes to working with Tom Cruise, Hamm was nothing short of effusive in his praise. “He’s amazing,” Hamm gushed, emphasizing the unparalleled professionalism and charisma that Cruise brings to every project. Beyond Cruise, Hamm also highlighted the joy of collaborating with legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Both men share a passion for hockey, which made for some memorable conversations on set. “Jerry’s an LA Kings guy, but he could live vicariously through me during the playoffs,” Hamm shared with a smile.
The Cast and Crew Behind the Sequel
Though the original Top Gun was directed by the late Tony Scott, the sequel will be helmed by Joseph Kosinski, known for his visually stunning work in films like Tron: Legacy. Returning alongside Cruise is Val Kilmer, reprising his role as Iceman from the first film. Joining the cast are newcomers like Miles Teller and, of course, Jon Hamm himself. “I think a lot of people are going to be pretty stoked to see it,” Hamm teased, adding, “I know I am.”
