An Unlikely Connection: John Meyer and Judy Garland
There’s one memory that John Meyer will carry with him forever, and it has nothing to do with Judy Garland’s tragic passing. It’s about the first time they met, back in 1968. Picture this: John, a 28-year-old pianist, finds himself in the same room as the legendary actress from A Star Is Born, who was then 46. Age difference? Yeah, sure, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was the chemistry that sparked between them almost instantly. John played her a song titled “I Like to Hate Myself in the Morning and Raise a Little Hell Tonight,” and the rest, as they say, is history.
“She loved the song, and she loved me,” John recalls with a smile, speaking to People about that fateful day at a mutual friend’s apartment in New York City. “Once our friend stepped out of the room, she pointed to herself, then to me, and mouthed the words, ‘I’m with you.’ And just like that, it was set in stone.”

Love Amidst Turmoil
John and Judy’s whirlwind connection happened just a few months before the Wizard of Oz star tragically passed away from an accidental overdose. During their time together, Judy was battling personal and financial struggles, but John was determined to be her rock. He wasn’t just there to provide emotional support; he became her manager, her agent, her lover, and her companion. “It was incredible,” John said. “Her reality was that she relied on the kindness of strangers, and I wanted to be the one she could depend on.”

John never took Judy for granted. He saw the deep need within her to be loved and cherished, and he did everything he could to fill that void in her life. “Her biggest motivation was always, ‘Love me,’” he explained. “She made everyone prove their love in every relationship she had. She would push the limits of commitment until you were staying up with her for 36 hours straight.”
