It's amazing how life changes, isn't it? For Ree Drummond, the beloved Pioneer Woman, the passage of time has brought a significant shift on her Oklahoma farm. Her kids are growing up and moving out, marking a new chapter in her life. This is a story about embracing change, finding joy in the quiet moments, and adapting to life’s inevitable transitions.

From Full House to Empty Nest: A Mother's Journey

Ree Drummond, the charming and talented food writer, recently shared her reflections on the evolving dynamics at her farm. “When Alex, my oldest daughter, left for college in 2015, it felt like a piece of my heart had gone with her,” she candidly admitted during an interview with Cowboys & Indians for their January cover. At 50 years old, she’s no stranger to life's twists and turns. While Alex's departure was undoubtedly bittersweet, having Paige still around kept the household buzzing with youthful energy. “The vibe in our home was still the same,” she reminisced. But everything changed when Paige followed in her sister’s footsteps.

The Shift That Changed Everything

“When Paige went to college in 2018, it was like flipping a switch,” Ree continued. “Our house transformed overnight into a man cave. Ranching and football became the main focus, and suddenly, I found myself in a world dominated by testosterone.” With her two sons, Bryce and Todd, still at home, life on the farm took on a new rhythm. But instead of letting the quiet consume her, Ree chose to embrace it. “It’s been a challenge to keep the female energy alive around here, but I’ve also learned to appreciate the peaceful moments,” she explained. “This new chapter has opened up creative avenues for me, and I’m finding joy in the little things.”

    Embracing the Bittersweet Moments

Ree shares her life with her husband, Ladd, and their four children—daughters Alex (22) and Paige (20), and sons Bryce (17) and Todd (16). Over the years, she’s opened up about the emotional roller coaster of watching her kids grow up and leave the nest. One particularly poignant moment came when she bid farewell to Paige. “Red nose, trembling chin, tight throat, aching heart,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “Leaving your child at college is no picnic. I’ve done it once before, but this time felt even harder. Through all the tears, though, I see the joy in watching her step into the next phase of her life. Paige, I’m so grateful to be your mom.”

I've got my mom glasses on, but that's okay 'cause I've got Paige by my side. The clock is ticking until she leaves for college. Just a little over six weeks. I'm measuring every single moment. Minutes have taken on a whole new meaning. At dinner last night, Alex asked me if I was ready for Paige to go. The two-man band in the restaurant's lounge was singing "You've Got a Friend" (the James Taylor version) and, well…a thousand tiny needles attacked my nose. I pulled it together but it was a close call. No more questions in public places, Alex! This stuff is hard, friends.
