Soledad O'Brien Shares Her Unique Take On Christmas Trees

Soledad O'Brien Says Christmas Trees 'Scare the Hell' Out of Her

As the holiday season rolls around once again, Soledad O’Brien finds herself reflecting on her early years as a local reporter. In a candid interview with Closer Weekly, she opened up about her not-so-festive feelings toward Christmas trees. Despite her husband, Bradley Raymond’s insistence on keeping the tradition alive, Soledad has a deep-seated fear tied to her past experiences covering tragic Christmas tree fires. Let’s dive into her story and the memories that shaped her unique perspective on the holidays.

A Holiday Tradition with a Twist

At the 3rd Annual #SupportYourGirlfriends Pow(H)er Awards, Soledad, now 53, shared her thoughts on the holiday season. "We’ve always had a tradition of getting a Christmas tree," she explained. "But every time I see one, I’m reminded of the countless stories I covered as a local reporter. Christmas trees catching fire and causing devastating losses in homes—it’s something that stays with you. Bradley, on the other hand, loves the idea of a Christmas tree and insists we have one. It’s a bit of a running joke between us!"

For Soledad, the memories of covering these tragic stories have left an indelible mark. "I know, terrible, right? It’s really terrible," she admitted. "Every time Bradley suggests we need a Christmas tree, I’m instantly transported back to those long nights as a local news reporter. It’s not exactly the happiest memory."

Soledad went on to elaborate on her feelings. "I have no fond memories of Christmas trees because I’ve covered so many overnight stories involving them. Bradley tells me I need to stop and embrace the joy of having a Christmas tree. But let’s be real—who hates Christmas trees?! Well, me. In local news, the holidays are often synonymous with Christmas tree fires and other tragedies. It’s truly awful. The thought of them scares me to no end!"

    A Shift in Perspective

Before her career as a reporter, Soledad cherished the holidays like many others. However, her experiences have reshaped her perspective. Despite her fear, she acknowledges that her husband’s love for traditions keeps their family spirit alive. This year, they’re planning a traditional Thanksgiving celebration. "Bradley loves traditions," she said with a laugh. "He loves Thanksgiving, so for ours, there will be an abundance of food. His mom cooks, and I... well, I buy all the ingredients and make sure everything is in place. I’m the one who makes it happen, even if I can’t cook a thing! And I love that he takes care of the tradition part because it brings us together. The kids love it, and he’s really created something special. Meanwhile, I’m happy to clean up after everyone—it’s my way of supporting the tradition!"

So, if you're lucky enough to visit their home this holiday season, don’t forget to save some room for dessert. "Save us some apple pie!" she joked.
