Let me tell you, meeting Dr. Ruth Westheimer in person is like having a warm cup of tea with an old friend. She’s just as delightful as you’d imagine from her countless TV and radio appearances over the past four decades. At 91 years young, this legendary sex therapist stopped by Closer Weekly’s NYC office in late August, and she was absolutely thrilled about our special Shirley Temple issue.
Dr. Ruth shared a heartfelt memory: “We used to watch Shirley Temple movies in my orphanage because they would make everyone smile, and back then, smiles were few and far between.” But her journey from surviving a difficult childhood in Nazi Germany to launching her groundbreaking radio show, Sexually Speaking, in 1980 is nothing short of extraordinary. Through it all, she’s brought joy, wisdom, and a positive outlook to millions of people with her candid advice and quick wit.

Dr. Ruth has a simple yet powerful message for all of us: “Be grateful for what you have.” She shared this wisdom exclusively with Closer in their latest issue, which is now available on newsstands. These days, she’s busier than ever, working on exciting new projects like updating her classic book Sex for Dummies and starring in a Hulu documentary, Ask Dr. Ruth, which was a hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

We had the chance to ask her about her family—her kids Joel, 56, and Miriam, 62, her four grandchildren—and her advice for staying sharp and engaged as we age: “Don’t retire, rewire!” she advises. “If you feel like doing something different, go for it!”

Why Return to Sex for Dummies After All These Years?
When the publisher Wiley approached Dr. Ruth about updating Sex for Dummies, she didn’t hesitate for a second. “They said, ‘Would you do an updated book and add material for the millennials?’ because the last one was 10 years ago. I didn’t let them finish the sentence—I just said yes. The beauty of this book is that you can flip to the parts that interest you most, and check out the drawings of different positions. It’s all about giving people the information they need in a way that’s easy and fun to read.”
