Tom Brady Opens Up About Raising Sons Who Don't Follow in His Footsteps

As a legendary football star, Tom Brady has always been a beacon of strength and determination on the field. But off the field, he's just like any other dad trying to figure out how to best support his kids. The iconic quarterback recently opened up about raising his three children—John Moynahan, 11, Benjamin Brady, 9, and 6-year-old daughter Vivian Brady—and shared some deeply personal insights about his parenting journey, especially when it comes to his sons.

Embracing Differences: A Lesson in Parenthood

During a candid interview with Men’s Health, the 42-year-old superstar admitted that he initially struggled with the reality that his youngest son, Ben, wasn’t gravitating toward the hobbies and activities typically expected of a preteen boy, like sports. Tom, who is used to excelling in high-pressure environments, found it challenging to come to terms with the fact that Ben simply wasn’t interested in following in his athletic footsteps.

    Learning to Let Go

“When Benny came along, I thought he would be just like Jack,” Tom confessed. “So I was like, ‘C’mon, let’s do this.’ And he was like, ‘Nope.’ And I was like, ‘What? No, do this!’” It wasn’t until his wife, supermodel Gisele Bündchen, intervened that Tom began to understand what was truly going on. “Gisele kept saying to me, ‘Would you effing understand that your son is different?’ It was hard for me,” he revealed. “I was like, ‘What do you mean? He’s a boy; he should just do all these things that I do.’”

But as any good parent knows, sometimes you have to take a step back and let your kids show you who they are. And that’s exactly what Tom did. “The reality is that Benny just likes different things,” Tom explained. “And it’s great because now I just have to go do what he wants to do. When we do that, we have the best time. He’s like, ‘OMG, Dad, you’re so funny.’ He loves joking, and I joke back.”

    A Reflection of Fatherhood

The New England Patriots star admitted that raising his eldest son, Jack, had set a certain expectation in his mind. “Jack loves sports. He wants to try hard, and he never wants to disappoint his dad. That was me,” said the handsome athlete, who shares Jack with ex Bridget Moynahan. “I’d wake up early on weekends to do stuff with my dad. That’s why I didn’t party a lot. If Dad wanted to golf, I wanted to be there with him. And if I ever missed those things, it would crush me.”

Nowadays, Tom is focusing on embracing his children for who they are, rather than who he wants them to be. “Jack is just like me — he holds a lot in. Benny lets it all out. Vivi, she doesn’t care,” he explained. “They’re going to be their own selves, not who you want them to be.”
