He writes, “I might have been at Sloan Kettering hooked up to a slow drip of chemo, and my once proud Samson-like mane would be gone.” Howard goes on to joke about how crazy it would be to see his face without hair. But let’s be real, losing hair is just a small part of what chemotherapy entails. Still, it was a fear that weighed on him.
When Life Gets Serious
Howard kept this whole cancer scare under wraps for quite a while. It wasn’t until recently that he opened up about it. The story begins on the morning of May 10, 2017. Howard took a day off from his wildly popular show, The Stern Show. Rumors started flying around about why the workhorse behind Private Parts didn’t show up. He told everyone he had the flu, but that wasn’t the case. Howard was actually at the hospital getting surgery.

A Moment of Truth
Turns out, doctors discovered a growth on his kidney that had a 90 percent chance of being cancerous. Howard recalled in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “All I could think was, ‘I’m going to die.’ I was scared out of my mind.” Thankfully, the growth ended up being a benign cyst, but that close call made Howard reflect on his life and past behavior. He admitted, “I was completely messed up back then. I didn’t know what was up or down, and there was no room for anyone else in my world.”
