Shannen’s battle with breast cancer began in 2015. She underwent a mastectomy, followed by multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Despite the grueling treatment, she managed to take care of herself as best as she could. “I came out of it in the best condition I think anyone in my situation could be in,” she explained. “But here’s the thing—once you’re off chemo and radiation, people assume you’re fine. They think you bounce back. What they don’t realize is that your body has been through something so incredibly difficult that it never fully recovers.”

While Shannen has overcome incredible obstacles, she’s still working through accepting herself post-cancer. “I’m trying to figure out how to embrace who I am now,” she admitted. “I’ll never be the size I used to be, and some of the medications I’m on are zapping the collagen from my skin. So, I’ll never have that wrinkle-free face again. I can be critical of myself, but there are some things you just can’t fight.”
“What I’m learning is to be kinder to myself,” she continued. “I try to live each day as an amazing, precious gift. It’s not always easy, but it’s something I’m working on every single day.”
